About the Project
In “Path to the Podium”, a game and research project, play as one of 16 international athletes to get to the top. Along the way, face challenges in the sport system and fend off opponents using team work and rewards, while navigating unfairness and bias.
Sport as a social institution highlights fairness and equality to create even playing fields, however, underlying demographic issues can give advantages and disadvantages to players in high performance sport, across the world. With the topic of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in mind, I investigated into how design can help bridge this gap by making a social tool to explore these topics in the form of a playable board game, to help us understand what kinds of obstacles our beloved atheletes may be facing to pursue their dreams. Furthermore this activity hopes to inspire some insights, bridge and identify what constitutes as underprivileged families or participants in the hopes to create more newcomers to “white-collar” sports.
