Tokyo Game Show

Tokyo Game Show, commonly known as TGS, is a video game expo/convention held annually in September in Chiba, Japan. It is presented by the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association and Nikkei Business Publications, Inc.

Rebrand/Aesthetic Choices

The original brand and identity for the exhibition had some equities worth keeping, however I did want to tone down the number or colours and elements. I drew inspiration from the tech elements, boke light shapes/light particle shapes, and textures from TGS's current identity.

I explored some type pairings and shapes to get a better idea of what the new brand would become. I formed some shapes from the idea of Sony's game controller symbols and played with the word Tokyo Gameshow.

Storyboarding

The final storyboard matches the tempo of the type with a piece of music I found on freesound that I thought matched my exhibition. I used the music loops, ups and downs to time the information coming onto the screen to give myself a pace to work with. This also helped to create a kind of build up for the main information.

I researched the featured events and upcoming game demos/shows that would be highlights of the event and compiled my copy in a text file. Next, I created the graphic elements I knew I would need for the teaser video and imported them into AE.

This project really helped me to learn some new things I wanted to try like morphing shapes/objects, using different effects and masking on layers of type. I also used some expressions on the layer positions to add additional movement to the type, to give it some life towards the end as opposed to a static ending. It took longer than expected to work with the morphing of the objects, but in the end it worked out and I think I will try to use it again for more complicated shapes in the future.
